Frequently asked questions
Questions from patients and families about using ReSpeak.
Do I need a speech therapist to use ReSpeak?
No. You can download the app and start practicing on your own. That said, ReSpeak works best when your SLP assigns your exercises and monitors your progress. If you don't have an SLP, ask your doctor for a referral before starting a home practice program.
Is the app really free?
Yes. ReSpeak is free to download and free to use on iPhone. Your SLP pays for the dashboard they use to monitor your progress, but that cost is not passed to you.
What kind of phone do I need?
ReSpeak runs on iPhone with iOS 17 or later. It does not currently run on Android or iPad as the primary device, though iPad works in a pinch. An Android version is planned.
I have aphasia. Is this app simple enough for me to use?
The app was designed with post-stroke aphasia users in mind from the start. Large text, simple navigation, one task at a time, and landscape orientation for easier reading. Your SLP can also walk you through the app at your next session.
My family member had a stroke. Can they use this?
Yes. ReSpeak is built for people recovering from stroke-related aphasia. A family member can help set it up. Once it's running, the exercises are designed to be completed independently.
What if I get stuck on an exercise?
The app provides hints automatically. On word retrieval exercises, a semantic cue appears on the first missed attempt, and a phonological cue on the second. You don't need to ask for help. The app offers it at the right time.
Can I practice if I don't have an internet connection?
Some features require a connection to sync your recordings to your SLP's dashboard. Basic exercise content will still load if you've opened the app recently. A fully offline mode is in development.
My SLP uses a different app. Can they still see my ReSpeak data?
Only if your SLP has a ReSpeak clinician account. The recordings and session data go to the ReSpeak dashboard. If your SLP doesn't use ReSpeak, you can still use the app independently, but they won't have direct access to your data.
Is my voice data private?
Your recordings are stored securely and are only visible to you and the SLP you are linked to. ReSpeak does not sell data or share it with third parties. Read the full privacy policy for details.
How long should I practice each day?
Ten to twenty minutes daily is more effective than a single long session once a week. Research on aphasia recovery supports short, frequent practice over infrequent longer sessions. Your SLP will guide you on the right amount for your situation.
